As the calendar turned to 1984, Jun Togawa released her debut solo studio album Tamahime-sama. Forty years later in a sold out concert venue in Taipei, Taiwan, her influence on not only music but also culture in general was palpable. Droves of fans replicated her iconic “anti-idol” styles like maid dresses and dragonfly wings, while others brought the punk ethos that her music also equally espoused. While there were no cameras allowed at the show, Jun Togawa’s youthful energy is burned into my brain, an unbelievable performance from both her and P-MODEL.
This episode begins and ends with the first and last tracks, respectively, of that landmark album, packed in the middle with some old and recent favorites, as well as a curated block of ambient electronic music.
I’m excited to bring you my long-running radio show in a new format here on Substack – please let me know what you think!
