Not much has changed in my hotel room since the last newsletter, which is probably a good thing. I write this on Quarantine Day 10 (out of 14) with the sun now finally showing itself in Taipei after a rainy welcome. The mountains to the Northeast of the city that were hidden behind fog for the last week have now made themselves clear.
Clearly a lot has been going on in the world in the last week as Ukraine is under attack. Taiwan has felt a bit of pressure as another territory with a lot of eyes on it, though it is obviously an entirely different situation. I encourage you all to read more about the ongoing situation in Ukraine and also the discussions around Taiwan – the better informed we are in other parts of the world, the more we can do to support when it is sorely needed.
caroline - “Good morning (red)”
Just a lovely tune from new band caroline out of London. The whole album is very delicate and an exercise in patient listening – beautiful musical arrangements surrounded by well-placed empty space, songs that have room to breathe and that force you to listen carefully.
Cola - “So Excited”
Former members of the band Ought (including lead singer Tim Darcy) teamed up with a new drummer and formed Cola who release their debut later this spring on the great label Fire Talk Records. The new project manages to keep the same energy and nostalgic rock feel as their beloved previous band, so we should be very excited for the full release.
Arcade Fire – “Mountains Beyond Mountains”
Paul Farmer, humanitarian and founder of Partners in Health, passed away last week. His work in Haiti sprouted a relationship with the band Arcade Fire whose singer Régine Chassagne is of Haitian descent and who have spent much of their own time assisting the nation. “Mountains Beyond Mountains” has become an Arcade Fire live staple with Chassagne taking lead vocals, which is fitting as the song was named for the book about Farmer and his initiatives.
