The following journal entry was written in May 2022 but was left unreleased until now.
It is now presented in its original form.
While I thought I’d be able to set a schedule, a routine of communication with everyone back home in the U.S., life in Taipei has consumed me.
Mandarin class is challenging and rewarding; Taipei is bustling with activity in many different, unpretentious ways; the nature throughout very generously allowing for a reprieve from city life. All of this and more took me out of my American mindset and firmly planted myself here in my home west of Da’an Park and the other bed and breakfasts I’ve called temporary homes during my stay here.
When our classes went online due to a surge in the pandemic in Taiwan concurrently as I hit my one-month-left mark here, the urgency to both disconnect grew stronger. I made my way to the southernmost tip of Taiwan, a beach town named Kenting, and turned my restlessness into relaxation.
I was able to reflect on all my time spent in Taiwan, though the process started with some pretty severe anxiety. All of the record shops, restaurants, new friends that all meant so much to me – would I be able to visit again before I leave? When would I see them again? These communities I joined and learned from – would it be as difficult to stay in touch as it has been the other way around with everyone back in the U.S.?
